Aimee Mann - One More Drifter In The Snow - 192VBR

One More Drifter in the Snow offers a bittersweet--but not downbeat--look at a holiday that represents the height of happiness for some, the depths of sadness for others. Following in the classy footsteps of Miss Peggy Lee, Aimee Mann takes an intimate approach to an increasingly hectic time of year. In other words, the set is a throwback to a slower-paced era. (In cinematic terms, that means more Meet Me in St. Louis, less Jingle All the Way.) There are two fitting originals, "Calling on Mary" (Mann) and "Christmastime" (Jon Brion and Michael Penn). The rest are seasonal favorites, with the exception of Jimmy Webb's "Whatever Happened to Christmas," which may be new to some. On all tracks, the focus is on the tasteful strings--credit Patrick Warren for the chamberlin, celeste, and pump organ--and Mann's delicate delivery. Overall, the artist is more interested in providing comfort than radical reinvention, although a dreamier-than-usual "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" enjoys a slight edge over the other selections. Grant Lee Phillips, taking over from Boris Karloff, provides the theatrical narration on "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch

The Chieftains - The Bells of Dublin - 128KB

Ireland's world-class ambassadors the Chieftains seem determined to play with anyone who is anyone, regardless of genre. On The Bells of Dublin, they do an exceptional job of teaming up with the likes of rockers Jackson Browne and Elvis Costello, as well as songbirds Marianne Faithfull, Rickie Lee Jones, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and Nanci Griffith. There are many resplendent performances here, the least of which is Costello and company's raucous "St. Stephen's Day Murders." Like a banquet of traditional Irish fare with some updating to accommodate individual guests, Bells is the kind of holiday record you don't want to end.

Harry Connick Jr. - When My Heart Finds Christmas

New Orleans pianist, singer, and songwriter Harry Connick Jr. has done what many makers of Christmas records strive for but seldom achieve: he's made a Christmas record that sounds convincingly like a '40s period piece and rigorously like a cool, contemporary jazz disc. His powerful, self-written Christmas songs sound like polished standards, and he delivers the whole package with a sassy, vocal economy (with the occasional New Orleans accent) and an orchestral richness that is never indulgent or overwhelming. When My Heart Finds Christmas is a true classic that no lover of big-band jazz and singing (in the Sinatra style)--and Christmas music--should be without. There are so many great moments here that singling any one out would be at the expense of the others. Still, the reverential, solo-piano intro to "Ave Maria," Connick's own "(It Must've Been Ol') Santa Claus," (a rousing, second-line swing tune), and his triumphant "I Pray on Christmas" (a get-happy-now gospel song) deserve mention if only because they'll earn Connick extra credit in heaven and on Earth.

Dr. Dementia - Holiday in Dementia - 320kb

Dr. Demento is an archivist elf of the first order. Testament to his timeworn ways is this collection of fractured holidays tunes and his earlier The Greatest Christmas Novelty CD of All Time. The good Doc showcases 17 tunes here, although the collection could do without nearly a quarter of those, including Joseph Spence's oddity "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and the Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping." The latter is a pop-rap tune that sounds pretty tame in the cracked company of the inimitable Bob Rivers ("The Twelve Pains of Christmas"), Spike Jones (sending up New Year's resolutions), and Father Guido Sarducci ("Santa's Lament"). Then there's James & Kling's perverse "A Terrorist Christmas," as well as a couple of loopy Hanukkah tunes, one a rap number by Doc Mo She and the other from Gefilte Joe & the Fish.

Micahel Hedges - Oracle - 128kb

Michael Hedges's last album before his untimely death is one of his best. The 1996 album opens with "The 2nd Law," a quietly intense and introspective piece, and moves on through the percussive "Ignition," the sprightly "Gospel," and two variations on the same piece, "Jitterboogie" and the playful "Jitterboogie (Family Version)." The sole vocal piece on the album is a nice turn on the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," with Hedges backing himself on guitar and fretless bass. There are two other interesting cover choices, Henry Mancini's "Theme from Hatari!" and Frank Zappa's "Sofa No. 1." Oracle won the 1998 Grammy for Best New Age Album, and the award was richly deserved.

Jimi Hendrix - Merry Christmas - 192kb

This CD features two versions of Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies jamming on Christmas songs. It is a loose jam session where they play instrumental versions of "Little Drummer Boy", "Silent Night", "Auld Lang Syne" and "Taps" (although "Taps" is not listed on the CD). The extended version here features more of "Silent Night" tacked on the end, that seems to be grafted from a different take. If you are a fan of Jimi's feedback drenched guitar playing, you should get a kick out of this. The other song here is the Electric Ladyland outtake "Three Little Bears". As Jimi himself says during the song, it has silly lyrics, but his guitar playing is great. It is an inconsequential, but fun song.

Enya - Amarantine: Christmas Edition - 320kb

From the first blanket of choral voices awash in reverb, Amarantine is instantly recognizable as a product of Enya, the Irish chanteuse who has created a genre unto herself. Although it's been five years since her last CD, on Amarantine it's as if time stood still. The triumvirate of Enya, lyricist Roma Ryan, and producer Nicky Ryan work the formula they perfected on Watermark, layering her voice in lush choirs pushed along by pizzicato synth strings, swooning orchestral pads, and harpsichord arpeggios. On tracks like "Less Than a Pearl" and "Drifting," Enya flirts with a timeless sound born in gothic chants and hymns. The former is one of three songs that she sings in Roma Ryan's fictitious language of Loxian. It seems to free her, especially on "The River Sings," a veritable rave-up where she gets the tribal choir going in the style of Scottish mouth music. But to get there you have to slog through slo-mo ballads that manage to be dirge-like and singsong at the same time, like the Carpenters on Quaaludes. The relatively restrained arrangement of "It's in the Rain" almost attains a folk-like simplicity that Enya hasn't experienced since she sang with her siblings in Clannad a quarter-century ago. Amarantine sounds like it was born in cloistered solitude, self-referentially echoing Enya albums past.

Christmas With Babyface - 192VBR

This CD is not just for R&B lovers, but enjoyable for everyone, especially jazz lovers. Babyface showed me a side that I had never seen in him before. He showed his versitility in a major way on this project. The selection of musicians was perfect...The sound quality is superb...It's a must buy!! To me it didn't have to be about writing original Christmas songs...The traditional songs that we all know and love have endured over time far more than any new songs will. However, Babyface created a masterpiece by adding his personal touch to each one.

Star Wars - Christmas In The Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album - 256kb

This album was produced by Meco Monardo, best known for his disco album Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk. It features the voice of Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and sound effects wizard Ben Burtt provides the sounds for R2-D2 and Chewbacca. The strangest thing about this album is that it features an 18-year-old Jon Bon Jovi (credited as John Bongiovi) fronting a high school choir on the song "R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas Jon Bon Jovi made his first recording ever on this album (he’s credited as John Bongiovi), singing lead vocals on "R2D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas." Jon did it as a favor to his cousin Tony Bongiovi, one of the producers of the album. What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)" reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 1980, credited as "The Star Wars Intergalactic Droid Choir and Choralle." It was the third digitally recorded single in chart history.

Celtic Heartbeat Christmas - 256kb

Of the many Celtic Christmas offerings, A Celtic Heartbreak Christmas certainly has the edge on bragging rights and might be the best Celtic collection you can stuff in a big stocking this year. Many of the groups featured here are the premier players on the international Celtic music scene, and those that are not measure up with the same adept playing and spirit. Chief among the established bands are Altan, Clannad, and Nightnoise, while followers of trad jigs, reels, and airs will recognize Declan Masterson as the former piper for Patrick Street and Moving Hearts. Just some of the highlights include Celtia's "Christmas Pipes," a feel-good song driven by flute and pipes, and Anuna's "Angels Are Singing," self-described as "a serious attempt to resurrect 17th-century seasonal polyphony written in the style of Irving Berlin." Oddly enough it also sounds delightfully well suited to the doo-wop era.

B.B. King - Christmas Celebration of Hope - 320kb

Now that Charles Brown is gone, it's up to B.B. King to uphold the blues for Christmas. If this first collection of holiday music is any indication, he deserves his own igloo in the North Pole. Self-produced with his touring band in New Orleans during a spring heat wave, A Christmas Celebration of Hope finds King overcoming both the heat and Yuletide music clichés, turning out an inspired and rollicking album that is lit from within by King's generous spirit and gracious heart. Like others before him, King dipped into the blues and R&B holiday canon, but instead of just recycling well-worn classics, he plucked gems like "Blues Decorations" and "Backdoor Santa" out of obscurity and polished them to a high gloss. When King does cover standards, like "Merry Christmas, Baby" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas," he imbues them with his own earthy personality and sleek, restrained playing. King also includes two originals in this surprise package: "Celebration," which he first released in 1960, and the new instrumental, "Christmas Love." This record not only will make Christmas merrier for the listener, it will also help people suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes, as King has donated the proceeds to the City of Hope, the world-renowned biomedical research and treatment center.

Aly & AJ - Acoustic Hearts of Winter - 320kb

By teen-pop standards, Aly & AJ make a bold move on on their first holiday album and second disc. Instead of fizzing up the figgy pudding or decking the hall with a bunch of flashy hip-hop beats, they play it straight--"Silent Night" is justly peaceful (heavenly, even), "Let It Snow" lands as softly as a blanket of the newly fallen white stuff, and "Joy to the World" holds up its heartfelt peace sign by way of classic old-fashioned carol-crooning. Clearly the girls got a little giddy going through their parents' holiday music collection while conceiving this disc, and clearly they were thinking beyond its commercial prospects (how many underage starlets would challenge their cash-strapped core demographic with "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"?). Yet Acoustic Hearts, apparently, do not beat by yuletide sincerity and good-girl harmonizing alone--in an overt but not unlikable nod to the teen need to kick out the holiday jams, Aly & AJ let loose on three tracks: "Deck the Halls" gets into a George Michael-inspired groove, and two originals--one happy ("The Greatest Time of Year") and one sad ("Not This Year")--plumb the meaning of the annual sugarplum dance to semi-rockin' beats.
